Keeping upholstered furniture clean will increase the life of the fabric. All upholstered furniture and furnishings should be vacuumed regularly to keep them fresh looking and free of dust build-up.
Any visible dirt should be removed by brushing with a hand-held nylon bristled brush followed by vacuuming. Using the correct nozzle attached to the hose of the cleaner, thoroughly vacuum all surfaces of the furniture: back, sides, arms, skirt and the platform beneath the cushions to remove hairs and all traces of dust. Vacuum both sides of the loose cushions too. Remove stains by blotting them with a dry cleaning solvent.
Before steam cleaning upholstery, read the manufacture’s instruction label to determine whether or not it is safe to do so. Then rent or buy an upholstery or
multi-purpose steam cleaner. Start cleaning from one end of the furniture and move across to the other or from top to bottom. Steam cleaning removes dirt from the fibers and because not chemicals are used in the cleaning process, just water – no residues are left in the upholstery (residues are known to attract dirt in the long term), leaving the fabric just damp.
Important steam cleaning tips:
- If you own velvet or draylon fabric furniture or curtains do not apply steam to them as their fibres may be adversely affected by steam even at low temperatures.
- If you steam clean in winter, just turn up the heat for a couple hours to ensure your furniture dries thoroughly before use. Upholstery will dry quickly - usually in less than 6 hours.
Further care can be given to extend the longevity of upholstery by preventing, or delaying fabric from fading by keeping your furniture out of direct sunlight - close blinds or curtains when the sun shines most directly through windows closest to the upholstery.
Steam cleaning will make sure that your furniture gets a proper, deep clean, right down to the bottom layer. Due to this it can help alleviate some of the health problems that can sometimes crop up as a result of your upholstery not being cleaned properly. If any of your family suffer with asthma or any allergies then the dust mites and other nasty elements that can get deep into house-hold fabrics and bedding can really have a negative effect. Giving a thorough
steam clean will get rid of all of the mites and can mean that the asthma or allergy problem can be slightly alleviated.
