Window cleaning is one of those less obvious chores that get added to  the list of cleaning jobs. However, I am sure we will all admit that  clean windows are a pleasure to look out of. One that is free of dirt  and debris allows for more light to shine through and brighten up the  rooms plus the view out is so much clearer.

To keep your windows looking sparklingly clean and streak free you  will need to ensure that they are cleaned regularly, however tedious  this may be. If you are going to attempt cleaning the windows  yourself the following window cleaning tips may come in handy.

There are a number of products on the market - chemicals as well as appliances - specifically designed  for the job. Alternatively you can make your own window cleaning  solution by combining together 3 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 cups of  warm water with a dash of dish-washing liquid (if you make the water  too soapy it will leave streaks on windows - or just leave this ingredient out). Or, half cup vinegar and two tablespoons of lemon juice with a 3 litres of warm water.  These mixtures can then be decanted into spray bottles from where you  can easily apply the solution to your windows.

A well know method from bygone years but still used by many today, is  the use of newspapers as a way to get windows sparkling clean and  streak-free. If you want to try this method, I suggest the use of  rubber gloves to prevent the ink from rubbing off onto your hands and  staining them. Coffee filters or print-free newspaper is perhaps a  better option if available. In fact any soft paper can be used  provided that it will not scratch the glass or leave any trace of  lint, which can be very difficult to remove.

A squeegee is another good means to streak free windows. Once you  have washed off the dirt and dust using a cloth or sponge plus  cleaning solution place the squeegee at the top of the window and  drag downward until you get to the bottom. Wipe the squeegee dry with  a damp cloth and return the squeegee to the top of the window. Make
sure it slightly overlaps the recently cleaned section. Drag it  downward again to the bottom of the window. Repeat this process until  you have cleaned the entire window before moving on to the next one.

For best results, avoid cleaning your windows in direct sunlight. The  heat of the sun will quickly dry your cleaning solution and cause  streaks to form. Try window cleaning in the early morning hours  before direct sunlight has had time to beat down on them. This will  help you keep the streaks to a minimum.

Cleaning the exterior windows is generally easier to clean than the  inside. The inside is presented with the challenge of having to  remove ornaments and other window sill clutter  to facilitate an effective  cleaning process while eliminating the risk of breakages and  accidents. Once preparation is complete the same procedure can be  followed as for the exterior windows.

Or, a method many people probably have not considered is the use of a  portable steam cleaner with a window squeegee attachment for an  efficient time saving method to cleaning windows. A steam cleaner is
easy to use and rapidly cleans windows and mirrors without the use of  chemicals or making-up solutions. Because no buckets of water are involved, there is less  risk of an accidental water spillage resulting in further cleaning!
